The Maine Department of Education (MDOE) leads statewide efforts to expand environmental and climate literacy. The MDOE Maine Green Schools Program is designated by statute to play a central role in the development of the Green School Network (GSN). Established in 2025, the Green Schools Network is designed to connect educators, administrators, community partners, and youth to strengthen practices, improve school facilities, and expand access to curriculum. MDOE collaborates with statewide networks such as the Nature Based Education Consortium (NBEC), the Maine Environmental Education Association (MEEA), Maine Early Childhood Outdoors (MeECO) and other community-based nonprofit organizations, to support outdoor learning, education, school planning and career pathways for all Maine youth. The host site will provide statewide communication tools, existing partnerships, and programmatic leadership that the VISTA volunteer will help organize into a cohesive statewide network.
Member Duties : Maine’s rural communities experience persistent poverty and limited access to educational resources. Many schools in these areas lack funding, staffing, and curriculum support. Rural districts also have fewer pathways for youth to connect to Maine’s growing economy, limiting long-term economic mobility. The VISTA project addresses this by building the capacity of statewide systems that expand access to learning, reduce school operating costs, create youth leadership opportunities, and strengthen pathways to living-wage careers for students from disadvantaged communities. The VISTA will assemble existing materials into a resource hub, organizing and centralizing curriculum, funding opportunities, and community-based learning programs while engaging youth, educators, and key school personnel as leaders into their own virtual discussion groups to ensure long-term momentum and creating cross-sector partnerships to reduce school costs and expand future opportunities for students.
