Director of Organizing

Based in NYC office
(statewide role with travel to other locations as necessary)

The New York State Nurses Association is a labor organization of over 42,000 frontline nurses standing together for strength at work, nursing practice, safe staffing, and healthcare for all. We are New York's largest union and professional association for registered nurses.

The Director of Organizing reports to NYSNA’s Field Director. The Director of Organizing is responsible for directing all activities and functions of the Organizing Department staff and will lead in all aspects of organizing campaigns and, as such, must coordinate:

a) Implementing the union’s goals for organizing new bargaining units; 
b) Internally organizing existing bargaining units where needed and in coordination with internal field staff; and 
c) Planning and driving member mobilization campaigns. 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  • Implement both short-term and long-term organizing campaign plans; 
  • Oversee member mobilizations as assigned
  • Assign and direct the work of the organizing department staff; 
  • Develop and implement programmatic staff development plans for all organizers;
  • Build and manage relationships with elected local bargaining union leaders, members and other staff members; 
  • Work closely with communications staff to create campaign messaging and materials;
  • Coordinate the integration of work in all departments with the Organizing Department to maximize effectiveness and build capacity; 
  • Evaluate staff and conduct annual performance appraisals.
  • Oversee the preparation and distribution of campaign materials in coordination with communications staff;
  • Coordinate the use of the union’s website and social media resources for organizing and base-building; 
  • Facilitate carrying out the philosophy of the NYSNA Program which reflects the overall philosophy to organize Registered Nurses and to promote NYSNA members, current and future; 
  • Maintain current information on labor, organizing and union trends and evaluate the impact on nurse organizing;
  • Liaise with member committees and with other unions’ and organizations’ campaigns;
  • Responsible for building a member-based structure for organizing member-to-member; 
  • Prepare the annual Organizing department budget, monitor monthly expenses and assure that departmental expenses are within approved budget limitations; 
  • Collaborate with staff at all levels and from all departments to achieve organizing department goals and organizational goals; 
  • Submit a written annual report and monthly reports to the Executive Director and others as requested;
  • Coordinate the assignment of staff to external campaigns;
  • Develop and maintain a professional, supportive and challenging work environment for staff of the organizing department; 
  • Oversees initial contract campaigns through ratification;
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:

  • At least 7-10 years of labor organizing experience, at least 5 years in a supervisory role; 
  • Baccalaureate degree or MA preferred 
  • Demonstrated success at providing effective leadership and direction to union organizers and union campaigns; experience in health care and with registered nurses preferred;
  • Ability to manage, develop, support and mentor staff; 
  • Demonstrated success in building and developing committees from the beginning of their formation through the ratification of the first contract; 
  • Ability to create and execute campaign organizing plans that include strategic research, staff development, communications plans and legislative strategies;
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, supportive of teamwork, and able to motivate by positive example;
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours;
  • Travel is required, primarily throughout New York State; This position is based in the New York City office and is a statewide role
  • Demonstrated writing, speaking and presentation skills, as well as strong database skills;
  • Experience integrating websites and social media into organizing campaigns preferred; 
  • Demonstrated commitment to progressive trade unionism, and experience working with coalitions a plus.

Salary Range: $145,000 – $165,000, depending upon education and relevant experience.
